The business name is the name of your business operations. If you do business under a name other than your own, you need to register a company name. Most businesses will need to apply to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) for a registered business name.

By October 31, 2018, all companies need to register all transaction names as company names in ASIC in order to continue to use it. From this date, the ABN lookup will only display company names registered in ASIC.

• You already have an Australian Business Number (ABN)

• You are applying for an ABN with the Australian Business Register (ABR)

• Use company name availability search to check if company name is available

​Special attention: The registered business name is not the same as the registered trademark. The legal effects of the two are different, and they need to be treated differently. If you have successfully registered your business name with ASIC, please note that ASIC registration does not give you the exclusive right to use a business name, and it does not mean that you own the business name. If you want to obtain these rights, you need to register a trademark with IP Australia. After successful registration, you will have ownership of the trademark, and at the same time, you can pursue third parties who infringe your intellectual property rights in accordance with the law.
