Tax File Number(TFN) registration

1. What is a tax file number (TFN)?

Tax File Number refers to:

  • Your personal reference number in the tax and superannuation system

  • Your tax and superannuation records and important parts of your identity-so please keep them safe

  • Lifetime application-even if you change your name, change jobs, relocate across states, or settle overseas, you will all use the same tax number

Tips: Although you do not have to have a tax file number, without a tax file number, you will pay more taxes. You still cannot apply for government benefits, submit your tax return electronically or get an Australian Business Number (ABN)

2. What conditions must be met to apply for a tax number?

If you meet the following three conditions, you can apply for a tax number:

  1. You are a foreign passport holder, permanent immigrant or temporary visitor.

  2. You are already in Australia.

  3. Your visa is one of the following:

  • Permanent residence visa

  • Visas with working rights (417, 420, 421, 462)
